Challenges I'm always doing something to push myself outside my comfort zone and improve myself as a person. I'm a big fan of the 30-day challenge, picking some change that would improve life and trying to stick with it for 30 days. The first such adventure I had was a 30-day workout-every-day trial, and it really opened my eyes to the world of health and fitness. One of the things it helped me understand was the concept of gradually increasing weight. You don't want to lift weights that are too heavy, but ones which are too light are no good either. It's best to lift just the right amount, and gradually increase it. This is completely analogous with the projects we do to better ourselves in any way. Sometimes, a goal is too hard. We need to build up "muscle" with smaller projects and gradually work our way toward the big goal.
Language and Communication When I was in high school, I hated languages, even just the tiny amount of Spanish I was required to take. It wasn't until my attitude shifted radically that I approached language with an open mind. And then I fell in love. Now I'm a polyglot-wannabe language nerd. By learning about language, we learn about ourselves, for if the brain is a computer, then language is the sourcecode. The language I'm studying most intensely right now is Japanese.
Relationships I was clueless about relationships most my life. As late as my mid twenties, I had still never had a real girlfriend-- or even really tried to have one. I was living in denial, secretly envious of every couple I saw, refusing to address that area of my life because I was ashamed of my loneliness. Finally, I couldn't live like that any longer. Unsure what else to do, I embarked on a two-year journey deep into the community of pickup artists, studying everything I could about relationships and seduction. Now I'm retired from the community and enjoying a deeply loving relationship with a wonderful girl. The whole adventure has given me tons of insight into how people get along.
Self Development The purpose of life is to grow and change and learn and develop as a person. All the specific phases of life are like levels in a game, they're there for us to enjoy and relish until we have reaped the lessons they have to offer. Our time in this world is meant to be full of joy and abundance, and my number one goal is to live up to that standard. As I develop myself, I'll share the process on this website, so that others may benefit and develop alongside me. Join me in this lifelong quest.
Meet The Author My name is Samuel Alexander. I'm 25 years old and in my third year as a PhD student in mathematical logic at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. My life has never been "normal", and for much of it, I was ashamed of my quirks. But now I've realized that noone really is normal, and by being a little less normal than usual, that just gives me a whole lot more interesting stuff to contribute to the conversation. Divergence from the norm began early in my childhood. Born in Flagstaff, Arizona, I was raised in a radical fundamentalist Christian family. The family was relatively poor. Things like television and video games were banned. Despite all this, I always knew my parents loved me a lot; they were just doing the best they could with their own knowledge and resources. When I came of school age (now in California), I joined my older brother in being homeschooled by our parents. This would continue until 6th grade, when I finally spent a few years in public school. My interests in my youth were very unusual. Computer programming, psychic powers, hypnosis, and calculus. After 9th grade at a crazy private Christian high school, I dropped out of school and started playing online games every waking moment of every day (though, on paper, I was back in homeschool). Nevertheless, I managed to get my hands on some self-development material (at a time when this stuff was not popular at all), and so I had very high self-esteem and such. At 18, I joined the U.S. Air Force as a weather forecaster. I wouldn't stay in long, though. It wasn't for me; after finishing boot camp and tech school, my passion for mathematics flared up again and I escaped the military to go to the University of Arizona. In two years I graduated with a 4.0 in mathematics, and from there I went to Ohio State University, where I am now. Of my time in university, several years were spent homeless by choice, living in campus buildings. I became a pickup artist, and for a brief overlapping period, I was the world's premier homeless pickup artist. I spontaneously decided to spend a month in Japan, travelling there with only four days reserved in advance and nothing but a backpack full of stuff. And, eventually I even launched this website. Now I've written over 200 high-quality articles, all available absolutely free for all to enjoy and learn from.
