There are certain things that everyone passionately loves, or violently hates. The epic tragedy, The Silmarillion, is one of those things. You probably already know whether or not you like the book itself, just based on your personality, so I won't bother endorsing it or bashing it. Instead I'd like to talk about some the philosophy I took from it.
I've extracted the three powerful themes from The Silmarillion, for your enjoyment and transformation:
--------
Redemption through Grace
--------
A strong theme of forgiveness runs through the Silmarillion. It is made very explicit that even the most evil, utterly unrepairable acts, can be forgiven by the gods. And that it is NEVER too late to turn from one's evil ways.
--------
The Intrinsic Beauty of Creation
--------
"Behold I love the Earth, which shall be a mansion for [Mankind]!" -God, in The Silmarillion
A *strong* theme throughout the Silmarillion is the notion that the world is inherently beautiful and wonderful. That even amidst the worst tragedies, there is joy, love, and beauty. Indeed the Silmarillion goes so far as to say that tragedy and grief ENHANCE the beauty of the world. Further, in the theology of The Silmarillion, nothing pleases God more than for his Children to simply rejoice and enjoy the wonders and pleasures of the world.
--------
The Power to Defy Fate
--------
Because human beings succumb to death, we are *driven* to accomplish, to adventure, to discover, to leave a legacy. In this way, death is a priceless gift-- one which "even the Gods will eventually envy"-- which gives us the Power to rewrite fate. Although the future of all things is loosely predetermined, humans can alter that future through lucid actions. We can change our lives, our histories, our very destinies.
