The French Revolution: Day 13

This is day 13 of my quest to teach myself as much French as I can in several hours a day for 30 days. You can read the project's introduction here. Since it's day 13, I'm doomed to horrible luck. But horrible luck is no excuse to skip a day of language study!

But today will be a very light day, because I spent the day with friends and now I don't have a lot of time. Time is precious, folks, appreciate every moment :) Who knows, we could die tomorrow! So let's appreciate the moment today.

REVIEWING SCHEDULED CARDS

In case you came late to the project, I'm doing sentence mining with the optimized flashcard program Anki. Anki is a free program where you can make flashcards and review them, but when you review them, you get to rate how hard they were; the program uses your ratings to super-optimize the whole flashcard process.

Just to spice things up a bit, today I reviewed the sentence cards and the audio pronunciation cards side by side, in two separate Anki windows. I hope that doesn't make Anki blow up. Sentences: 240 cards were scheduled. Audio: 91 cards were scheduled. I took turns, one sentence, one audio, one sentence, one audio... part of the reasoning here is an attempt to keep myself highly conscious of the task, which can get very repetitive. To switch more quickly between the two windows I used Windows XP's "alt-tab" feature. Of course, I finished the audio cards first. I forgot to time the reviews, but both decks together took around 40 minutes total.

I skipped the pronunciation rule cards today.

NO TIME TO DO ANYTHING ELSE TODAY

One rule of thumb about language learning is: you can only be as good in the target language as you are in your base language. Part of being good in your base language, is being an interesting person with cool stuff to talk about. Therefore, if you have the choice of doing flashcards and sentence mining, or hanging out with awesome friends, it's best to hang out with the friends.
