This is day 17 of the French Revolution, my quest to teach myself French in 30 days! (Or, at least, to teach myself as much French as possible in an hour or two for thirty days)
As this project matures, the time spent on it per day will be getting smaller, and starting to hover around one hour per day. Really that's because I have a lot of other stuff to do, but the official tack will be, that I'm demonstrating how to study a language in a sustainable way, avoiding burnout.
YES MAN
I recently saw the new Jim Carrey movie, Yes Man. I liked it. It's all about positivity, reality expansion, and learning new things. Basically, he has to say "Yes!" to any invitation or request or suggestion to do something. Of course, this gets him into all sorts of adventures. The "Yes Man" attitude is a good attitude to take if you're learning a language, because to become fluent, you're probably gonna have to be introduced to a lot of stuff you never even knew existed.
ENIGMA
I listened to some music by Enigma today. I've always liked Enigma's music, but it totally never occurred to me that the lyrics in some of the songs are French. And now that I've been studying French, I'm hearing these lyrics in a totally different way. I won't say I can understand them all, but somehow they've been transformed from meaningless voice to meaningful voice.
REVIEWING SCHEDULED CARDS
Today there were 239 sentence cards scheduled for review. I did the review without music, to get through it more efficiently (less distraction). It took about 33 minutes. That's 7.2 cards per minute. That's actually more efficient than timeboxing was yesterday. Is timeboxing just not all it's cracked up to be? Well, the discrepancy might be because today I had no new cards, just cards I'd already reviewed before.
There were 33 audio pronunciation cards scheduled for review. It took about 5 minutes to do them all.
MINING AUDIO CARDS
I spent 26 minutes to mine all the audio cards at the about.com French pronunciation pages for individual letters. Basically about.com has a separate page, with some example audio files, for each letter of the French alphabet. I mined 'em all, a total of 90 audio files (not counting duplicates and files I already had). That's about 3.5 cards per minute, not my fastest run, but there was a lot of time spent navigating between pages or beginning to add a file only to find I already had it.
Total time spent studying today: 64 minutes. Just about right.
