Six Reasons to Learn a Language Together

Looking for something to make your relationship more interesting? Why not study a language together? Here are some reasons to study a language together with that special someone in your life.

A SECRET CODE NOONE ELSE CAN UNDERSTAND

Imagine being able to sweet talk (or naughty talk) each other while waiting in line somewhere, or while on the bus, or just walking down the street. And noone around you can understand what you're saying. It's a conspiracy between just the two of you! The more obscure the language, the better.

A BONDING EXPERIENCE

Studying something together can really bond you with someone. You can take turns, switching the role of teacher and student. Or maybe one of you is more naturally inclined to one of the two positions. Just think, it's like being high school sweethearts even though you didn't go to high school together!

UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER BETTER

As you study a foreign language, it increases your understanding of your mother tongue. Before I started studying languages, I didn't have half a clue how crazy and interesting English is! (Did you realize English is one of the hardest languages in the world?) If you study a language together, the same sort of phenomenon will help you understand each other better.

OPEN THE DOOR TO BETTER TRAVEL TOGETHER

Traveling with a special loved one is already awesome enough, but it becomes even more awesome if you can both grasp some of the local dialect. Just think, a millionaire can use his money to buy a fancy hotel, a fancy cruise, a fancy guided tour, but he can't buy a taste of the true local culture, unless he puts in the time to learn the language. By learning the language, you and your loved one can enjoy a more adventurous trip than the millionaire!

EXCHANGE EXOTIC LOVE LETTERS

Imagine exchanging love letters in French or Spanish or Italian. Ooh la la :)

BE MORE CULTURED TOGETHER

Culture is one of the things that makes a person interesting. A more cultured relationship is a more interesting one, with more possibilities for creativity, spontaneity, and innovation. It's impossible to learn a language together without becoming more cultured together.

CONCLUSION

If you're looking for a way to make your relationship a little more interesting, consider learning a language together. Not only will it spice up the relationship, it'll improve both of you as people.

Not to mention the motivation it brings. Me and Mentat are always chatting and Japanese stuff and are always talking about how we can do it better. For example, because of him I track my stats on my blog and make it a point to seek out new kanji I don't know. A little friendly competition is always good =].

It only works if you are both really interested in the same language. If not, then one person will have more motivation than the other and get ahead, and the other person will be more likely to lose interest.

I can never get anyone interested in doing what I'm doing at the time I'm doing it. They usually start about five years after me.
